The best type of loan to get is a federal student loan.

Here are the steps you need to take to get federal financial aid:

1) Fill out the FAFSA. This will determine if you are eligible for financial aid. Go here:

2) Once you are eligible for aid, choose a government-based student loan. The best loan to get is a Federal Perkins Loan. Take out federal loans only. They require no cosigner and no credit check. the interest is less an the fees are less. Private student loans are evil and have stub standard terms, higher fees, and higher interest rates.
Your school will be able to give you a federal Stafford loan for the summer, and then again for next fall and spring. Here is a good book about federal loans, there is a chart that lists the max amounts you can borrow and the interest rates.
