Distance Learning Graduate Schools

Steven Said:

What is your opinion on graduate schools through distance learning?

We Answered:

As long as the distance program is through a reputable, brick and mortar college then by all mean go for it. Alot of schools offer distance education to accomodate their students.

But if it through a school like UOP, ITT Tech, or AIU...dont do it! Those schools are ripoffs and their degrees are not valued by many employers.

Marie Said:

What things should I consider when choosing a distance learning program?

We Answered:

So long as you stay with "traditional" colleges with regional accreditation you should be OK for degree recognition. However, keep in mind for most graduate degrees, especially competitive graduate degrees, you need to do well in one of the tests (GRE, MCAT, LSAT, etc). Do you think you will absorb a good education by studying completely online? Good enough to do well on these tests? I think not.

Rita Said:

What is your opinion of "distance learning" Ex: via the internet for graduate degree acquisition?

We Answered:

I'm currently taking distance learning courses as well as university classes in order to graduate more quickly.
I can't speak for how the job market would react to a degree from a distance learning school, but I can say I learn significantly more from the classes I take over the internet to the ones where I physically go into class. There is no comparison.
In my opinion the classes at the university are a joke, the prof talks a bit and does a slide-show presentation, the TA I'm assigned, or a couple friends in the class, are the only ones I can really ask a question.
It’s a complete waste of time, studying the downloadable slides from the class website is the only worthwhile part, and the only thing I need to do to pass the exams.

Julia Said:

Any good MBA graduate schools that are NOT hard to get in?

We Answered:

Generally, if an MBA school is good, it is popular and hard to get into.

AACSB accreditation is the gold standard, but the fact is there are too many mediocre school even with AACSB accreditation.

Studies show only the top tier MBA school really make a significant difference in career earnings. Full-time attendance at a mediocre school is a definite losing proposition.

There is one exception to the AACSB and hard-to-get-into rule: Heriot-Watt University in Scotland offers a world class online ("external") MBA that admits just about anybody. It's a tough and thorough MBA.

Discuss It!
