Duane Said:

Is it normal to feel so much anxiety going into college?

We Answered:

It isn't college that's bothering you, it's the panic attacks. It is not normal to get panic attacks over things like filling out applications. You need to talk to someone, a couselor of some sort.

College is GREAT, one of the best times you'll ever have. Even IF someday you find you are in the wrong profession, so what? That can happen without going to college! And no matter what, you will always, always have that degree. I know... I went to college for nursing, got my degree. Eventually I decided that nursing wasn't for me and I got out -- but my degree is still looked on as very good when I interview for jobs!

Good luck and please get some help.

Is it normal to feel so much anxiety going into college?

We Answered:

Don't worry, I felt the same way when I started and now that I am transfering from community over to a UC I feel like this again. I spent 4 years in a JC before I even figured out what I want to major in. It takes time and don't worry, the purpose of those first few years is to find out what you're interested in for the long term. At first, I wanted to study Art history, but after I took some classes, I realized it wasn't for me. When you start taking classes, you'll find out which ones you find the most interesting and you will take it from there.

If there is something you really want to study, even if it feels almost impossible to you because you think it is too difficult or the chances are too slim, don't give up on it. I struggled through some really tough math classes and actually surprised myself, to get to where I am today. I still can't believe that I passed with such high scores in a subject that always flustered me.

College is just like high school, except with more reading and less melodrama. It takes awhile to adjust. Don't fret over it. After you get your schedule down and talk to a counselor, you'll feel really relaxed. Just make sure to meet with a counselor so while you're undecided on a major, they can tell you what general education classes to take.

I wish you all the luck
