Online General Education Courses

Sherri Said:

Can I take required general education courses online?

We Answered:

It is possible to earn a four-year degree entirely online these days, but you won't do it for free. All accredited colleges and universities - the only responsible places to seek such degrees - require fees for each and every credit hour you earn through them online...Where you'd save money would be not having to pay room and board...that is, if your parents are willing to help you with your education by allowing you to continue to live and eat at home while you pursue your studies.

Florence Said:

Are there online general education courses that are transferable to any university ?

We Answered:

The key is to make sure the college/university is accredited. I have three basic recommendations for everyone looking into online/distance education. They all have to do with exploring; after all, you have to defend your assets.

1. Make certain that you have triple checked their accreditation. First, they tell you what it is, then you go to that accrediting body’s website (not through the link provided by the school), and thirdly you would visit the department of education to see what they have to say. Do your diligent research into the institutions once you have narrowed down to a couple. You can look at the Better Business Bureau for more information on the college.

2. You must have extreme self motivation and be able to teach yourself per say. This means that you will not have someone telling you verbally, so it is up to you to get the information from the course room, text, and other resources. The best way to look at it is like a guided independent study course.

3. Review your goals, personal and professional. Make sure that the school that you are going to offers the programs that match your goals. Do not settle. There are many programs that are similar, but you have to make the ultimate decision. Do not let it be based on finances and length of program, but the fact that when you are finished or near finished you will be able to assume your proper place in the career field sought.

You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

Is it possible to get a BS in Accounting without taking all of the regular "General Education" courses?

We Answered:

No, you can't "bypass" these courses.

Some colleges require more GenEd classes than other colleges, so pick a college that puts less emphasis on GenEd and more on technical and career-specific training.

Or, you could CLEP these courses if you already know the material. A CLEP exam proves you know the material so you get credit for the course and don't have to take it, if you pass the CLEP test.

Perhaps some kind of technical college may have more focus on the accounting curriculum. But remember, an "interdisciplinary" focus (learning diversely about many subjects) will provide you a solid background for further studies and life/work in general. You won't ONLY be doing accounting-related stuff 24/7 your whole life. And math IS A science, so not studying science is not an option anyways. Also everyone needs to know how to write efficiently (you'll have to deal with clients/superiors/etc, and written communication is a necessity). Everything has a purpose.

Good luck...!

What is the best college or university to take online college fully accredited college courses?

We Answered:

This field is probably too narrow to be the name of a major at many colleges. You would need to take some classes in IT which involve security. The only online college I would think of attending is the one that is run by the University of Maryland. I don't know if they offer these classes. I would not attend any proprietary (for profit) college even if they offer the major. Proprietary colleges are looked down on by employers for good reason.

I have not had experience with the websites which propose to match students with online colleges, but given the nature of the business world, I would expect that proprietary schools pay them for referrals and even more for referrals who enroll. Stay away from proprietary schools. They want your money more than they want to give you an education.
Non-profit colleges, both public and private, provide more educaton than the students pay for because they are supported by the government and/or by private contributions and endowments.
