Why Study English

Lynn Said:

Why Do We Study English Language?

We Answered:

The study of English is a relic of the British colonial empire and the economic imperialistism of its former colonies.

English is peculiar because it has greedily absorbed influences from the many languages upon which it was superimposed. Its eventual fate will probably be the same as that of its role model, Latin: eventual "death" and metamorphosis into many derivative languages when the pendulum swings back from "globalism" to localism.

Charlie Said:

why study english at university?

We Answered:

Well you study the subject English rather than the language. You would study texts and analyse then etc. Although not my idea of heaven some enjoy it. It helps out if you want to be a journalist or English teacher etc.

Hope that helps.

Justin Said:

why study english grammar?

We Answered:

Language is used to communicate. If you put words together without any thought to structure and rules, you'd not be making yourself clear and the words themselves would have been pointless.

Mario Said:

Dwight Said:

What's the best city in US to study English language and why?

We Answered:

Generally, it does not matter in what State you want to learn English, but i would say Boston. Its a historical city with old fashion people.

Rosemary Said:

Why are some books chosen for English Secondary School study study instead of others by National Curriculum?

We Answered:

It's done by a committee . But I agree that some literature seems totally unsuitable and out of place in our modern times, whereas others, even old and out of fashion, are written in a style which is very descriptive and important to understand.

I remember struggling with "The Old Man and The Sea" - what a load of drivel But it is considered to be a classic and is still used as a study book even now.

I would never give my students such rubbish - but then they don't have to take GCSE's!
