Does anyone know of some resources for teaching high school economics students about cooperative businesses?

We Answered:

You can have the students form a cooperative business. What better learning opportunity than by participation?

Print some money. Divide the class into: Members of the cooperative, the wholesalers, and the public.

Decide on a product. Pencils, candy kisses, etc.

Give each member of the cooperative some of the funny money but not enough to actually purchase a product from the wholesaler on their own. So they combine their money and purchase product, which the public buys so the coop can purchase more product, which the public buys.... Soon they have money and product and could vote to take a candy kiss as a dividend.

Make a written plan that also allows for the coop to make decisions.

Wikipedia has a fairly extensive history of coops in the US and abroad and defines Rochdale.

Does anyone know of online resources for teaching high school english?

We Answered:

There are many many sites out there, a simple search will do. Several books have multiple sites dedicated tot he teaching of them. However, not knowing what books you will be teaching makes it hard for anybody to point you to a site. I'd suggest starting with a personal "get to know me" essay that the students can do for the first day, so you can find out what resources are available to you. If you want a good poetry introduction assignment, check out:

http://www.rccsd.org/RKeim/index.htm

on that site there is also a bigger poetry reserch project:
http://www.rccsd.org/RKeim/Poetry_Portfo…

You may also want to do spelling and vocab before getting into paragraph and essay stuff. try

Good luck! If you need anything more specific, feel free to contact me.

quadriplegic school teaching methods/ resources/ advice?

We Answered:

You can not ask for concessions in school and STILL want to be considered mainstream. Concessions for the few consume at every venue (school) the budget meant for the larger number. It is incredibly expensive to make every school accomodate every potential special need and it is unfair to all the other students.

The schools are, typically, for the masses who can handle THAT environment. It is an unhappy and unfortunate situation that it can not bend to every extreme to accomodate every situation.

Many students have to work harder to achieve what others seem to grasp with ease . . . if they want it enough, they struggle and find success.

For children with special learning needs, there are accomodations (centralized schools where budget dollars are spent to serve the many of those special needs) rather than costing EVERY school. These well serve to educate and provide diplomas that are recognized and equal to the mainstream school.

Lectures can be recorded. Essays can be recorded and played back for the instructor to grade (verbally inserting paragraph breaks & punctuation as well as other grammar). Testing can be orally presented.

is anyone a geography teacher with resources or teaching ideas they have for year 7 8 and 9 geography?

We Answered:

I used to play Carmen Sandiego-like games with my ESL kids, and they loved it. You can either do group verbal games in class, or give them homework with a detective tinge. The best thing about it is that you ca make the stuff really tough, but they'll be so caught up in the detective role-playing element that they'll work through the hardships.
