Teaching Job Fair

Maria Said:

At a job fair, what is the best way to present your resume and paper work (ie: folder, stapled, etc)?

We Answered:

When attending any job fair or interview, always, always, always have a resume on hand.

My husband is a National Parts Distribution Manager for an automobile maker and when he brings home resumes he hands them to me to read.

They are interested in: training, work experience, and volunteer work THAT IS RELATED TO THE JOB YOU ARE SEEKING, and awards related to the job and references from people that are knowledgeable about your work or training. On the bottom of your resume put "References Available Upon Request". Most employers don't check references until you have passed through other interviews in their company. At that time, they will ask you for references.

I would present it in a clear Presentation Folder that is lightweight and stands out from the rest. Too many times I have seen resumes that are dirty from coffee, food, mud, etc and are difficult to read. The clear presentation paper preserves the resume and shows that you care enough about the position, the reviewer and yourself to present yourself in a positive light.

Also, make sure you dress appropriately for the job fair. Most people don't think about that when attending, but the employers are looking at the total package you present - including yourself.

YOU are the presentation. Rehearse any possible questions that someone may ask. Don't hem and haw or say "I dunno" or "yea" or "uh huh". A simple YES or NO is what the employers are looking for. Look the interviewer in the eye and give a firm handshake. Don't offer more information than is asked. There will be time at a later interview to reveal more information. Make sure you know what you want, what you are willing to do and what is important to you. Interviewers hate it when the first question asked is "how much does this pay" "how much vacation do I get". Those are considered perks and can be discussed at a later time.

Make sure that you present yourself in the best possible light and make sure your resume highlights your accomplishments. When the employers know that you are taking this serious, they will take you serious.

Good Luck!

Critical Needs Certified Teaching Job Fair at Gwinnett county school system? What should I prepare?

We Answered:

At a teacher job fair, the questions are generally basic. You will be asked what your teaching philosophy is, what are some experiances with teaching/children are, what you would do for classroom management, etc. They will not ask you about specific questions relating to a subject, because there usually isn't a specific job they have for you. They are more looking to see what type of personality you have and if you are suited to teach in their district. I would research a little about the district and the types of schools involved. Bring copies of your resume!
Good Luck!

What do you bring to a job fair for teaching opportunities in your area?

We Answered:

I've been to three teaching job fairs and never ever opened my portfolio at any of them. it was a waste of time and effort as far as I am concerned.

You need resumes, business cards (if you don't have any, get some plain cards printed that have your name, address, phone numbers and email address) also bring a nice pad and pen.

Don't print your resume on white paper. Spring for the extra couple of dollars and have your resume printed on gray, cream, or pale blue paper, in a heavier weight than regular copy paper. This way it will stand out in the large pile of resumes that the schools receive. It is a nice touch to buy extra of this paper, or the same paper in a smaller size, and use it for your thank you notes (which you will write to EACH principal the next day, no emails).

Wear comfortable shoes. You will be on your feet a lot and it is hard to be enthusiastic and perky when you have blisters. Bring a bottle of water, a non-smelly snack, and some gum or mints.

Does anyone know when the next job fair is for teaching in NYC?

We Answered:

Unfortunately, the teaching job fairs for this year are over.

Don't give up hope on your job search, though-- oftentimes schools will hired teachers shortly before school starts. Last-minute changes in student enrollment numbers can cause a school to do some hiring right up to the time school starts. (I was hired for my first teaching job a week before school started.)

Go to the phone book and call all of the HR offices... ask if there are any anticipated last-minute openings. If you don't snag a position, subbing is still a good option.

Here's a good eBook about finding teaching jobs: http://www.iwantateachingjob.com Maybe it can help you.

Good luck to you! Look for those job fair advertisements beginning in January.

How do I find an elementary teaching job overseas.?

We Answered:

I assume that you are current in your teachers registration. In Ontario,Canada teachers ( whether they are elementary or secondary school teachers get a monthly professional magazine which not only has interesting articles on current issues it also has advertisements for overseas positions.I would use this as a starting point. You could also enquire at the university from which you graduated to see if they offer any job assistance to past graduates. They may also have an information board that will have oversea jobs.I would think that your professional association could also let you know about job fairs. You could also google for teaching jobs overseas, check newspapers for job fairs or contact other teachers in your area who may have taught overseas or who might know someone who taught overseas, Make sure you check out what the pay is, do you get assistance looking for living accommodation , who pays for flights to and from the country, how long do you have to make a commitment for and what happens if you don't like it is there a penalty ?Good luck.
