Teaching Middle School Math

Salvador Said:

Do you need to be a math genius to teach middle school math?

We Answered:

No, in fact many middle school teachers have poor math skills and no interest in improving them. You'll need calculus, but you don't need to teach it, so as long as you're solid in the others you should be OK. And it will be nice to have a teacher who enjoys math - none of mine did before high school.

Requirements for teaching middle school math?

We Answered:

You need to know enough calculus to be able to pass the Middle School Math content area exam. The questions in the Praxis II exam for Middle School Math, I believe, are mostly high school and college level, including calculus. (The idea being, the state doesn't want to grant a teaching license to someone who hasn't learned more than middle-school level math.)

No, you don't need to major in math in college, but a math education major would be helpful, or just be very, very good in ALL math concepts (algebra, functions and graphs, statistics, probability, geometry, measurement...) and hope that "missing" the calculus questions don't drag down your grade too much.

Best to you.

How can a elementary teacher also teach middle school math?

We Answered:

I got a degree in education, with emphasis in elementary education. My major was fine arts and my minor was math/social studies.
My teaching certificate stated that I was qualified to teach K-8 9 (all subjects), and 9th grade Fine Arts.
Check with your state, but I think you can get a minor in math and that will transfer to your credentials.

Teaching math in middle school?

We Answered:

In CA, you need a single subject credential in Mathematics to teach in middle or high school.

It is a separate credential from a multiple subject teaching credential.

In order to be admitted to a single subject credential program you will have to pass your CSET in Math.

Every school has a different program. The one at SF State is a one year program.

Trying to decide between teaching 2nd grade or middle school math and science. Advice?

We Answered:

I think the most rewarding choice for you would to be teaching the middle schoolers, especially since you are teaching those normally dreaded subjects of math and science, you can take a bunch of kids who dont like these subjects, and by teaching in a fun and creative manner, you can motivate them to do better, start concentrating, and above all starting to love math and science. another suggestion though, is dont give them the traditional "problems from the book" homework, give them fun and exciting homework that will motivate them even more. You can also take your class on field trips to learn math and science by doing, you can take them to natural parks, and based on what youve taught in class ask them questions about what they see around them. Teaching grade two would still be good, though in middle school you get way more opportunity to motivate the students who have "given up"

Hope this helps, and I hope you excell in your teaching career. The kids, no matter what grade you choosee, will admire and respect you, i am sure.
